We got him.

We got him because this community came together to support us. We got him because he demanded not to be left behind.

We got him because he spoke out loudly and unambiguously and said that the world that we - as Californians and Americans - are offering our abandoned, vulnerable dogs, is beyond unacceptable.

As a strong, opinionated person, I'm a proponent of vocalizing loudly. It's part of why I love this breed of ours. And I share his opinion.

As the person who pushed for his rescue, I have the honor of giving him his rescue name, which necessarily captures that opinion. That name is Tikkun (pronounced tick-oon).

It is a Hebrew word that not all of you will know. It is part of the phrase that is central to my rescue philosophy, tikkun olam, the ethical imperative to repair the world. It matters little whether you embrace the concept of tikkun olam as a religious commandment from a divinity or as a secular ethical imperative for us as human beings, whether you have any religion or no religion. Regardless, it is the thing that these huskies are howling for us to do.

I promise you, Tikkun, we will repair the world. And we will start by repairing your world. The promise that we make to you is that you will never want for loving human touch going forward. You are safe now, for the rest of your life.

And we are committed to fighting for them all, for the rest of our lives. Tikkun would accept no less. And neither does the teaching of tikkun olam. This week, we honored that precept. For 23 dogs, we are repairing the world.
